The USCIS requires certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that
he or she is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.
The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification.
The following format is suggested by the USCIS:
Certification by Translator:
I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________.
Signature_________________________________
Date_________________________________
Typed Name_________________________________
Address_________________________________
In some countries however, it is a requirement for translations of such documents that a translator swear an oath to attest that it is the legal equivalent of the source text. Often, only translators of a special class are authorized to swear such oaths. In some cases, the translation is only accepted as a legal equivalent if it is accompanied by the original or a sworn or certified copy of it.
Even if a translator specializes in legal translation or is a lawyer in his country, this does not necessarily make him a sworn translator.
