Literary translation is considered a writing effort in its own right. When applied to literature, the term "translation" connotes the art of recomposing a work in another language without losing its original flavor, or of finding an analogous substitute in the target language.
Translation of literature into and from English is one of the most successful and straightforward ways of encouraging an understanding and appreciation of other cultures but translation at its best is an art so, like any artist, the literary translator must master many crafts to turn that text into a brand new work of art and since there is no single path to producing a work of art, literary translators come from an array of backgrounds which make them understand, appreciate and convey the literary work.
Some literary translators begin as creative writers, others as language buffs, students or teachers of literature and innumerable other beginnings, none inherently better than the others; But one thing is certain, their chosen craft requires them to work simultaneously as readers, writers, artists, linguists, critics, and scholars. They are our eyes, our skin and our taste buds with which we can see, feel and savor other cultures through the marvelous world of literature.
